A. Meredith Walters – One Day Soon (One Day Soon #1)

 Synopsis

He found me in blood and tears.

I stayed with him through darkness and fire.

We loved each other in the moment between innocence and bitter truth.

We were the kids easily ignored, who grew into adults we hardly knew.

We weren’t meant to last forever. And we didn’t.

He ran away.

I tried to move on.

Yet I never stopped thinking about the boy who had fought to keep me alive in a world that would have swallowed me whole. He was the past that I buried, but never forgot.

Until the day I found him again, years after believing I had lost him forever.

And in cold, resentful eyes, I saw the heart of the man who had been everything when I had nothing at all. So I vowed to hold onto the second chance that was stolen from the children we had been.

Sometimes fate is ugly. Life can be twisted.

And who we are can be ruined by who we once were.

For two people who had survived so much, we would have to learn how to hold on before we were forced to let go.

Véleményem a könyvről

A jelenben Imi szociális munkásként dolgozik a kórházban. Senki sem tudja a nevét, azonban Imi felismeri benne a rég elvesztett szerelmét Yoss-t, akit azóta sem tudott elengedni.

My Review in English

There are stories that stay with you forever, carved inside your soul, leaving a permanent footprint in your heart. And this is one of those stories. It was raw and painful with so many emotions, that I truly had to organize my thoughts and feelings to write this review. This is a story about sacrifices, being lost, second chances, and a beautiful, pure love.

Imogen (Imi) and Yoss meet on the streets, after Imi runs away from home and from her disinterested mother. She is just 16 years old, lost, with no money, no friends, with no hope. After Yoss rescues her from a scary situation, they become friends. Yoss is on the streets since he was just 12 years old and he is the person who cares about Imi from the start, who takes care of her, who tries to put food in her belly, who protects her from the many evils of the streets. Their friendship soon develops to something deeper and they slowly fall in love. Imi lives for six months on the streets with Yoss and with his friends: Di, Bug, Karla and Shane, and it is really hard and really heartbreaking, but besides all the darkness there is always a little hope, laugh and love. But some days the darkness becomes bigger than the light and the darkness is a thief. A thief which always steals from a piece of their soul. Yoss and Imi always dream about their “One Day Soon”, that they will go to the beach, and they will live their ‘happily ever after’, but the faith has other plans so they lose each other for 15 years.

In the present, Imi works as a social worker in the hospital. One day a homeless guy is brought in beaten to half death. Nobody knows his name or his situation, but Imi recognizes her long lost love Yoss, who she was never able to forget. He is so lost, and so angry, and deeply scarred, and all of the beautiful brightness is lost from his green eyes, but Imi still sees all of the beauty in his heart, and she feels that maybe this is their second chance, that maybe this is their ‘one day soon’.
I think the brilliance of the book was given by the perfect contradiction of the ugliness of the reality, and the pureness and beauty of the love between Yoss and Imi. It was absolutely mind-blowing. Yoss, oh Yoss. He stole a piece of my heart and he broke it every single time when he had to give away a piece of himself for the daemons. It was so soul-crushing! He was such a complex character! He just gave and gave and in exchange to be able to give, he let his soul bugged. It was heart-breaking.

To tell the truth I couldn’t completely understand Imi. Maybe I just can’t put myself into her shoes but I just can’t imagine that I would leave my home behind and live on the streets starving and cold just because my mom doesn’t care for me so much. I understand that it would be really disappointing and I absolutely hated her mom, but she was not abused, or starved, she was able to go to school… etc. And yes, feeling neglected is really hurtful, but there are kids on the streets with so much more problems than hers. Maybe it was just her 16 years old brain, or her pride, but at the end I was really glad that she went home, that she was able to go home.

I love the parallel timelines in every novel, but usually I love the chapters of the past so much more, but not this time. The chapters of the past were so heart-crushing that sometimes I had to put away this book just for a few minutes to prepare myself for the next pages. But to tell the truth, it didn’t work because this is the kind of books which didn’t leave rest for my thoughts, which was always on my mind.

A. Meredith Walters always touches heavy subjects in her books, but she always amazes me with the professionalism of writing these stories. She paints reality like no other author and she does it with so amazing talent and with so much heart. The writing was flawless, like always, the cover is breathtaking, and I marked so many quotes that touched my heart. Moreover, this book was so authentic and eye-opening! There are so many people on the streets, lost and cold, who have to give up themselves for survive. And maybe one of them is a lost girl who is looking for love, a boy whose purpose is to care about the people around him, a girl with tattoos and piercings and with a huge heart, a funny guy who has rambling thoughts, a red-haired girl who loves a guy who can’t love her back, or a guy who always holds his back for you. This book is not an easy read and it deals with some really serious issues, but the ugly reality holds a so beautiful and pure love, hope and sacrifice.

My Favorite Quotes From the Book

“It feels like I’m falling, Imi,” he breathed.
“I’ll catch you,” I promised.
Lies. So many of them. They became our truth.
They would be our end.”

“It felt good. To smile. To laugh.
Natural.
Like heartbeats and sunsets.
Happy endings and old movies.
This was what Yoss and I were made of.
It was more important than the darkness. Than the secrets.
Than the ugly reality.”

“I wouldn’t tell him it wasn’t a new man that had me smiling for the first time in years.
It was the second chance that seemed to have fallen from the sky.
One that was all wrapped up in the man I thought I had lost.”

“Most people get over their first loves. They picked up the pieces and moved on.
That hadn’t been possible for me.
Because what Yoss and I had shared was more than first love.
It was deeper than adolescent lust and affection.
It had been soul changing.
Life altering.
It had been a reckless attachment during bleak, dangerous times. It had been a light in a murky darkness that had almost consumed us both.
I had gotten away, but I had left my heart behind.
Yoss had stayed and had apparently buried his heart deep.
We were both different.”

“Imogen, I’d give you the world if I could.” He brushed the hair back from my face. “But I don’t have the world to give you.”
“I lost you. And I felt as if I deserved that. That you were always a dream. One that I was lucky enough to hold onto for a little while.” His gaze moved to the window. “Then you became a memory. The kind that warms during dark nights and lonely days. You were my happy life. Even when you were living your own.”

“Even when I had nothing, he was everything.”

“I’m sorry I couldn’t be who you deserved.”
I stopped just before opening the door.
“I’m sorry I believed that you already were,” I responded softly.”
