Synopsis

Angelo nagyszülei a Rosselli család házvezetői, mégis a zsidó család gyermekeként kezeli a fiút. Ez egy tabu könyv. Egy katolikus pap és egy zsidó lány szerelmének története, amely végigköveti a második világháború eseményeit és annak borzalmait, mégis az egyik legcsodálatosabb történet, amit valaha olvastam. A könyv fő témája annak feldolgozása volt, hogy a katolikus egyház és a Vatikán hogyan bújtatta a zsidóságot a második világháború idején egy titkos hálózat létrehozásával, amely segítségével több ezer zsidó életét sikerült megmenteniük. Az írónő a kötetet végén nagyon sok érdekes dolgot ír le a könyv hátteréről, mégis számomra a legdöbbenetesebb az volt, mikor arról a hihetetlen kontrasztól írt, miszerint Olaszország zsidóságának 80%-a menekült meg a második világháború során, míg Európa többi részén a zsidóság 80%-a veszett oda. Döbbenetes.

A From Sand and Ash egy gyönyörű líraisággal megírt, érzelmekkel teli történet, amely sokszor hagyott könnyek között, aggódástól hevesen dobogó szívvel és igen, sokszor igazán mélyről előtörő boldogsággal. Talán ez volt az írónő legizgalmasabb könyve, éjszakába nyúlóan olvastam, mert egyszerűen nem tudtam letenni. Nagyon izgultam Eva-ért és Angelo-ért, átéreztem minden fájdalmukat, minden félelmüket, haragjukat, bűntudatukat és a szerelmüket is. A szereplők nagyon komplexek és sokrétűek voltak, és mind Angelo, mind Eva nagyon a szívemhez nőttek, és nagyon tetszettek a vallomások is. Imádom, hogy Amy Harmon női karaktereiben mindig van egy cseppnyi lázadás és mindig kiállnak magukért, és ez Eva kapcsán is így volt, sőt talán az ő karakterének a hatalmas szíve mellett ez volt fő kulcseleme.

Ez könyv, kérdés nélkül 2016 egyik legjobbja volt számomra, és újabb 6 csillagos kedvencre találtam ebben a gyönyörű történetben. Bár a könyv eredeti címe A Candle and the Cross lett volna, én mégis úgy hiszem, hogy a From Sand and Ash ugyancsak tökéletes címválasztás, hiszen az írónő a világháború borzalmaiból és romjaiból valami egészen gyönyörűt tudott alkotni, akárcsak a könyvben szereplő üvegkészítők is az egyszerű homokból csodálatos üvegeket képesek varázsolni. És ez a könyv valóban egy csoda volt.

My Review in English

Amy Harmon stole a piece of my heart once again. A piece I will never get-, and never want back. I’m sure I will never forget this mesmerizing story, and just like the beautiful melody of a violin can find the deepest places of a soul, this story also found its way into the most hidden sections of my heart. From Sand and Ash is a beautiful story that was full with pain and struggle, but also with love, joy and music.

Angelo Bianco is only 12 years old when he has to move from America to Italy to his grandparents who are working for a Jewish family, the Rossellis. The little Eva Rosselli is only 8 years old but she is already a fiery little girl, who is really happy about Angelo’s arriving, hoping that she will find a playmate and a brother in him. As the years go by Eva becomes a beautify women who can conjure wonderful melodies out of her violin, while Angelo’s path has been directed towards the Catholic Church, so he is slowly approaching his ordination. But in 1938 everyone starts to feel the negative wind of the politics and the world and the storm clouds begin to gather over the Jewish society with the entry of the first Jewish laws. Although the brotherly love between Angelo and Eva starts to transfer and deepen, Angelo feels that in order to be able to help the Rosselli family he has to set aside his feelings, because it seems that the only way he will be able to help them is through the Catholic Church…

This is a taboo book. This is a story about a Jewish girl and a priest which follows through the horrific events of WWII, yet this is one of the most beautiful stories I’ve ever read. The story was also about a secret network made by the Catholic Church and the Vatican which helped hide Jews during WWII, saving thousands of Jewish lives, and this book touched my heart in so many ways.

From Sand and Ash is a beautifully written story full with emotions that many times left me in tears, with fiercely pounding heart with fear and yes, sometimes with a kind of happiness that bursts your heart. It was one of the most gripping books by the author which kept me reading long into the night because I just couldn’t put it down. My heart ached for Eva and Angelo and I felt all their pain, all their fear, anger, remorse and love. The characters were very complex and well developed, and both Angelo and Eva have grown very close to my heart. I love how all of the heroines of Amy Harmon always have a little hint of rebellion in them and how they always stand up for themselves. And it was the same with Eva, moreover I think her rebellion was the key of her character in addition to her huge heart.

This astonishing book was one of my top reads of 2016 without a question, and I found another 6 stars favorite in this beautiful story. Although the original title of the book was A Candle and the Cross, I truly believe that From Sand and Ash is maybe an even more fitting title for the book, because from the horror and ruins of WWII Amy Harmon was also able to create something truly beautiful, just like the way the glass-makers in the book could conjure wonderful bottles from simple sand. And this book was truly a wonder.
