Synopsis

Ezennel bebizonyosodott, hogy Amy Harmon ifjúsági regények terén is zseniális. Aki szereti Meg Cabot: Mediátor sorozatát, annak garantáltan ez is rögtön kedvenccé fog válni. Gyakorlatilag ugyanaz a történet, csak Amy Harmon színvonalon elmesélve, és talán kicsit furmányosabb is… 🙂

A könyv első jelenete 1958-ban játszódik és beillene egy West Side Story jelentnek is. 🙂 A frissen átadásra került gimnázium parkolójában találkozik a hírhedt Johnny Kinross, akiért minden lány bomlik a városban, és a gazdag ficsúr Roger Carlton egy korábbi összetűzés miatt. Elég sokan jelen vannak az eseményen, köztük Johnny öccse is. Valahogy elfajulnak a dolgok és úgy alakul, hogy a még üresen álló gimnáziumban köt ki a három fiú, ahol tragikus baleset éri a két Kinross gyereket. Amint megérkezik a rendőrség furcsa dolog történik. A kis Billyt megtalálják, de Johnny teste már nincs ott. Roger esküszik, hogy mikor elszaladt segítségért még mindketten ugyanott feküdtek. Több mint 50 év telik el amíg keresik az eltűnt Johnny Kinrosst, akiről feltételezik, hogy elmenekülhetett a helyszínről.

A történet fő szála 2010-ben játszódik. A főszereplő Maggie O’Bannon, akinek nagyon hányattatott sorsa volt idáig. Szülei halála után az egyetlen élő rokona nem fogadhatta be magához, mert a férje nem engedte. Nevelőcsaládtól nevelőcsaládig küldték, mire végre valahára a nagybácsi az örök vadászmezőkre távozott és a nagynéni befogadhatta a lányt. Maggie szenvedélye a táncolás és minden egyes alkalmat megragad, hogy gyakorolhasson, viszont ahhoz hogy legyen pénze a táncórákra, besegít az iskola gondnokának az esti takarításban. Minden egyes este felcsendül a folyosón a zene, így gyorsabban telik a munka és mivel a boogie ott van a lány lábában, még jól is szórakozik közben. 🙂 A lány végig azt hiszi, hogy az öreg Gus rakja be a retró zenéket kedvcsinálónak, de aztán rájön, hogy mindig csak az ő folyosóján szólnak a dalok. Egyik este meglát egy fiút az egyik folyosói szekrénynek támaszkodva és naná hogy rátör a frász, főleg miután egy régi fotóról megtudja, hogy ő Johnny Kinross. A vicces az egészben, hogy Johnny legalább annyira beparázik a lánytól, mert eddig bármit csinált senki nem látta őt. Maggie már korábban rájött, hogy látja bizonyos emberek szellemét, de Johnny esete valahogy teljesen másnak tűnik, mivel vele tud beszélgetni, meg tudja érinteni és teljesen olyan mintha valóban ott lenne.

Ez egy nagyon furcsa, de annál aranyosabb első szerelem története. Rendkívül fordulatos a könyv és a szereplők is nagyon sokrétűek. Érdekes módon ezúttal főleg Maggie karakterét éreztem komplexebbnek. Minden szereplőt nagyon megszerettem, maga a történet pedig nagyon jól van felépítve és végül minden idősíkon összeérnek a szálak. A vége pedig… Hát annyit elmondhatok, hogy mindenki készítse be a második részt, mert garantáltan szükség lesz rá.. 🙂

Nem akarom senkitől elvenni az élményt és nem szeretnék spoilerezni a következő résszel kapcsolatban, így csak annyit mondok, hogy a Prom Night in Purgatory szintén egy elképesztő és fordulatos könyv volt! Talán a gondolatok és a mondanivaló is mélyebb volt ebben a kötetben, a végén lévő fordulat pedig hihetetlenül ötletes volt és egyszerűen imádtam! Ezt a könyvet egy nap alatt kiolvastam, mert annyira magával ragadó volt, és egyszerűen muszáj volt tudnom hogyan alakul Johnny és Maggie története. Szóval gyerünk vegyétek kezetekbe ezeket a köteteket és hagyjátok, hogy titeket is rabul ejtsenek! 🙂

My Review in English

It has been proven now that Amy Harmon is brilliant in the field of YA novels, too. I think these books will instantly become favorites for everybody who likes The Mediator series by Meg Cabot. This is a very similar story but on the writing level of Amy Harmon, and maybe this book is also more smart and tricky. 🙂

The first scene of the book was placed in 1958 and it could have been a scene of the West Side Story. 🙂 The resident bad-boy, womanizer Johnny Kinross and the typical rich boy Roger Carlton meets in the parking lot of the brand new high school building for a rumble. They had a former incident and a lot of people get together in the scene to watch their fight, including Johnny’s little brother. The things get out of their hands and finally the three boys end up in the empty high school building, where a tragic accident happens with the Kinross boys. When the police arrives something strange happens. They find the body of little Billy, but Jonny’s body disappears. Roger swears that when he ran for help they both laid at the same place. More than fifty years pass by while they search for Johnny Kinross, who probably escaped from the scene.

The main thread of the story takes place in 2010. This is when the main character, Maggie O’Bannon lives. She had a really hard life because after she lost both of her parents she couldn’t stay with her only living relative – her aunt -, because of her husband who doesn’t let her move in. They send her from foster home to foster home, until the uncle dies and she finally can move in with her aunt. Maggie’s passion is dancing and she uses every opportunity to practice it. She needs money for the dance classes so she works at the school every night and helps out the school janitor with the cleaning. Every single night the music is flooding out the speakers through the corridors which gives her more opportunity to dance and enjoy her time beside work. Maggie thinks that old Gus plays the retro music for her, but after some time she realizes that the music plays only on her corridors. One night she sees a boy leaning against the lockers and she freaks out immediately, especially when she finds out from an old photo that the boy who she has seen was Johnny Kinross. The funny thing is that Johnny freaks out as much as her, because for fifty years he could do anything but nobody has seen him. Maggie already known that she can see the dead, but Johnny’s case seems so different. This time she can talk to him, she can touch him and she feels him just like he is beside her.

This was a story of a really strange, but so cute and gorgeous first love. This was an excessively twisting story and the characters were so complex, especially Maggie. I fell in love with all of them. I really loved the structure of the story, and that the threads finally come together on every timeline. And the end of the book… I’ll just say that everybody should prepare the next book, because it is guaranteed that you will need it! 🙂

I want the secure the surprise of the book for everybody, and I don’t want to make spoilers for the next book, so I just say that Prom Night in Purgatory was such an amazing book, too! Maybe the thoughts and the feelings of the characters became deeper, and the twist in the end of the book  absolutely blew my mind! I finished this part in one day, because it was so stunning and I was so curious about what will happen with Maggie and Johnny. So everybody pick up these books
and let them captivate you, too. 🙂
