Véleményem a könyvről

Colleen Hoover a kedvenc írónőim egyike. A könyv alapötlete zseniális. Egyetlen nap. November 9.

Több alkalommal is. Vajon feltudják-e venni újra a fonalat? Vajon mindketten továbbra is vártak a másikra?

My Review in English

Colleen Hoover is one of my all-time favorite authors.  She writes with outstanding talent, with good sense of humor and with good cast of characters, but what really makes her books exceptional is that every single one of her books are really unique and she didn’t disappoint me on this field this time either.  The base of the story is brilliant. One day. November 9th. What happens in one year? What happens in five years? If I look back to my last five years – or I don’t have to go back that far – a half year, the answer is: plenty of things. We never can be sure what will happen to us in a whole year and Fallon and Ben also share this uncertainty.

The 18 years old Fallon and Ben meet with each other first time under unusual circumstances on November 9th, when the stranger Ben pretends that he is Fallon’s boyfriend. Ben is an aspiring writer, while Fallon is an actress who will move from Los Angeles to New York on that exact night to try her luck there. After the “fake-boyfriend” thing they spend the day together and the connection between them is there from the first moment. Although they both distance themselves from the cheesy book’s “insta-love”, it seems exactly that way, and this is what makes it so funny. 🙂 But the moment of goodbye comes soon when Fallon leaves L.A. for good and they will never see each other again. They both feel the bond but neither of them wants to jump in a long distance relationship at 18 , while they know each for other only a few hours. Fallon and her mom have a theory, that before 23 you shouldn’t fall in love, because until that you don’t know yourself either.

“You’ll never be able to find yourself if you’re lost in someone else.”

This theory leads to an idea that they will see each other for five years only one day, on November 9th. Until then they don’t connect each other, but during this time Ben will write a book about their story.

Colleen Hoover’s book is about these November 9ths. It tells us about that single day every year and it tells us what happened with Fallon and Ben during the year. Maybe this is the reason why I felt that the storytelling is a little bit erratic. One November 9 was that kind of what I would like to read about for another 100 pages, one November 9 was where I wanted to throw my reader away and I couldn’t wait to read the next year’s November.

In the book Fallon says that a “ten points kiss” doesn’t exist without “angst”.  And this is definitely true for this whole book. Because the angst was what continuously made me turn the pages and made me not put down this book when it got really painful. But I wanted to put it down. Several times. Because it devastated me. During the read about the first November 9 I had butterflies in my stomach, but after the 4th November 9 (I am still really mad about that) instead butterflies I had a knot in my stomach. I felt the same uncertainty as the characters. What happened with them during the year? Can they pick up the thread again? Have they waited for the other one?

The three-quarters of the book I thought that this will be a 4.5 stars book for me. The characters were really good, Fallon was funny, sassy and inspiring and Ben was a true Colleen Hoover kind of book boyfriend, yet this book couldn’t blow me away like Hopeless or Maybe Someday . But then a kind of turning point came when I found myself on the floor. And after that the five stars was not a question anymore.

I loved the poems in the book and because Ben is a writer, sometimes he could form his thoughts on a so beautiful way that I couldn’t do anything else just melt away. <3 I also really loved that this book passed some beautiful messages which flooded from every single page like the importance of the inner beauty and that we should never give up on our dreams. (Plus I really loved the crossover with Ugly Love, it was really surprising. :D)

Five stars, but it didn’t land on my favorite shelf. YET. There are books which during the reading I just have the “favorite- favorite -FAVORITE” feeling, while I jumping up and down, and I tell everybody nearby who listens how great that book is. And there is another category when a book doesn’t lands on my ‘favorite shelf’ instantly. These are the kind of books which comes to my mind after weeks or months and I start thinking about them and I want to read them again. And this is when I realize that they are favorites. I truly hope that this book will be in the latter category and one day I will mention this book as one of my favorites. 🙂 But one thing is certain, Colleen Hoover could create something special again, so I highly recommend this book for everyone!

My Favorite Quotes From the Book

“Everything relates.
Everything is connected.
And it all begins on November 9th.”

“If she’s not careful, I might just fall in love with her.
Tonight.”

“It took four years for me to fall in love with him.
It only took four pages to stop.”

“You can’t leave yet. I’m not finished falling in love with you.”

Ladybug? He better be glad he’s my fake boyfriend, because I feel like punching him in his fake nuts for that cheesy moniker.”

“I think she expected me to let her go without a fight, but she’s not the kind of girl you choose your battles for. She’s the kind of girl you fight to the death for.”

“I read a lot of romance, so I know when the timing is right. If we’re going to kiss, it has to be book-worthy.”

“What are you waiting for?”
He drags in a raspy breath. “To wake up, I think.” He lowers his mouth and kisses my neck. “I’m dreaming, right?”

“I’ve seen the comments about how readers would do anything to make book boyfriends real. Here I am, convinced I’m standing in the arms of one, and I’m about to walk away from him.”

“I don’t want to be your first, Fallon. I want to be your last.”

“I’m not sure if sex is supposed to make you feel like you’ve just lost a part of yourself to the person inside you, but that’s exactly what it felt like. It felt as if the second we joined together, a tiny piece of our souls got confused and a piece of his fell into me and a piece of mine fell into him. It was by far the single most intense moment I’ve ever shared with another person.”

“So just to be safe, if kissing scenes are something you like most about books, what’s your least favorite thing? I need to know so I don’t screw up our story.”
“Cliff-hangers,” I say immediately. “And insta-love.”
He makes a face. “Insta-love?”
I nod. “When two characters meet and supposedly have this great connection right off the bat.”
He raises an eyebrow. “Fallon, I think we might already be in trouble if that’s one of your least favorite things.”

“I turn around and face my closet again so he doesn’t see the flushed look on myn face. He laughs quietly. “You were just thinking dirty thoughts.”
“Was not,” I quip.
“Fallon, we’ve been dating for two hours now. I can read you like a book, and right now I do believe that book is full of erotica.”
