THE HARD COUNT
Mature YA Contemporary Romance-Stand Alone

Release Date: July 15, 2016

Synopsis

Nico Medina’s world is eleven miles away from mine. During the day, it’s a place where doors are open—where homes are lived in, and neighbors love. But when the sun sets, it becomes a place where young boys are afraid, where eyes watch from idling cars that hide in the shadows and wicked smoke flows from pipes.

West End is the kind of place that people survive. It buries them—one at a time, one way or another. And when Nico was a little boy, his mom always told him to run.

I’m Reagan Prescott—coach’s daughter, sister to the prodigal son, daughter in the perfect family.
Life on top.
Lies.
My world is the ugly one.
Private school politics and one of the best high school football programs in the country can break even the toughest souls. Our darkness plays out in whispers and rumors, and money and status trump all. I would know—I’ve watched it kill my family slowly, strangling us for years.

In our twisted world, a boy from West End is the only shining light.
Quarterback.
Hero.
Heart.
Good.
I hated him before I needed him.
I fell for him fast.
I loved him when it was almost too late.

When two ugly worlds collide, even the strongest fall. But my world…it hasn’t met the boy from West End.

Hard count: Olyan stratégia, amit a támadás a 4 kísérletben használhat, hogyha 5 yard-nál kevesebb hiányzik a first downhoz.

Remélem, most már világos. 😀 😀

My Review in English

Ginger Scott said that she wanted to write something important. I truly think that she did. It’s amazing how much deepness she could deliver through the pages of a Young Adult Sport Romance story. This book held so many important messages and it has so much soul in it. And with this story the author stole another piece of my heart.

This is a story about a boy who fights for his dreams, a true talent who is not accepted because of his skin color, and because of where he lives. This is a story about a family which seems perfect from the outside, but inside it already started falling apart because of the pressure and the expectations. This is a story about two worlds colliding and a beautiful pure love.

Nico Medina is a boy from the impecunious part of the town, West End, where drugs, gangs, weapons and fear after nightfall is the part of the everyday. Yet Nico with amazing endurance and fight, with straight A-s and a scholarship is a student at Cornwall Prep private school, just like Reagan Prescott, the daughter of the football coach and the twin sister of the star quarterback of the school.

Reagan’s life is interwoven with football, and her life seems perfect, but nobody sees how much sacrifice is required by this life. Reagan’s dream is to go into film-making after high school, and she chooses the life of her family and football as the subject of her film: the trainings, the games, the difficulties and pains of her home life.

Reagan and Nico always argue about something at school. Although they always drive each other crazy, when Reagan’s twin brother, Noah is injured while playing, the one person Reagan can think about is the boy who always plays the true passionate game with his friends behind the sports field, Nico Medina. Nico has Mexican ethnicity and because of this and his scholarship, he is an outcast, and although his talent is obvious from the first moment, the coach has to walk into fire to let they even play him.

Ginger Scott show us perfectly the contrast of two words with her amazing talent and beautiful writing style and she touched so many important subjects with this book. This is a story about labels, acceptance, passion, dreams, loyalty, brotherhood and family.

P.S: This book is about american football so to tel the truth as an European I didn’t understand a word about this game and it still could engage me so much!! 😀 And what is Hard Count?

Hard Count: A strategy used by a quarterback in which they will use a deceptive snap count in an effort to draw the defense offsides. Typically, a good hard count will rely on using a longer count to force an overaggressive defense to rush too quickly. A hard count can benefit the offense in two distinct ways. First, a team could be called for offsides and the offense could gain five free yards. Second, a team could receive a free play and have a chance to gain significant yardage risk free.

It’s clear, right? 😀

My Favorite Quotes From the Book

“Nico is a wild stallion full of promise and gifts, and I’m not sure if he can be tamed.
I’m not sure if he should.”

“Look at me like you expect more. Look at me like it isn’t going to be easy.” Nico breathes the words against my lips, pausing when his bottom lip connects with my top, the faintness of the touch so much better than any other real kiss I’ve had. “Make me earn it,” he says, pausing again to take my top lip between both of his. “I’ll earn it. I’ll never stop trying to earn it…to earn you.”

“Reagan, your world…Nico’s world…same fuckin’ world. You come from different parts, but who cares? You meet in the middle. (…) We all have our own stories, and they part and intersect in many different places. It’s what makes us individuals. And no matter who we decide to tie our story to, there is always going to be someone who thinks they know the secret about why someone fits or doesn’t fit.”

“I was so afraid of you,” I say, stopping and folding the paper, looking to the flat stone in front of me. (…) “You made me, too. You lifted me. You pushed me. You believed in me. You saw the boy from West End. I surprised you. But you—you surprised me, too.”
“This life, our lives—they are colored by expectations. It’s the surprises, though—how we deviate—that define us.”

“There is always going to be someone who doesn’t like the idea of two people together. Black, white, Latino, gay, rich, poor—it’s all just shit we make a big deal out of, Reagan.”

“It made me feel like everything else I do for you does,” he says.
The intensity of his stare and the closeness of him makes my skin tingle. I suck in my bottom lip and breathe in quickly through my nose.
“And how’s that?” I ask, my head falling forward, my lips craving his—coming home.
“Alive,” he says against me, his lips grazing mine with the sweetest words ever. “Loving you—it makes me feel alive.”

“He’s made me want to act, to be better. In a little more than a minute, Nico Medina has made me believe—he’s made most of us believe.”

“(…) his hands never leaving from their home on either side of my face.
Home.
Nico is so much like home; like no home I have ever known.”
