Synopsis

We all play victims to our pasts; to the choices we make and the lives we create.

Légyszi emlékeztessetek, hogy soha többet ne ítéljek meg borító alapján könyvet! Hiszen Jay McLean megint megcsinálta! Ez a könyve is nagyon jó volt, annak ellenére, hogy annyira más volt, mint bármi amit eddig tőle olvastam. Komorabb volt, komolyabb volt, kicsit kevesebb humorral de annál több rejtéllyel, titkokkal és izgalommal.

Kyler Parker Afganisztánból való hazaérkezése után nem sokkal, egy komoly verekedésbe keveredik, és letartóztatják. Végül az ügye egy detektívhez kerül, aki mint kiderül nem más mint öt éve nem látott testvére, Jackson ‘Jax’ Davis. Jax egy kiutat ajánl Ky-nak a börtön elől, be kell épülnie egy feltételezett drogkereskedő köreibe, aki MMA harcokat szervez. Ky vállalja a feladatot főként, mert úgy érzi, bármit megtenne a testvéréért és jóvá szeretné tenni múltbéli hibáit, amelyek miatt borzasztó bűntudatot érez. A történet főként a jelenben játszódik de néhányszor bepillantást nyerhetünk a múltba. Imádtam ezeket a részeket, mert igazán szép plusz réteget tudtak adni mind a szereplőknek, mind a jelenben játszódó cselekménynek.

Ky újdonsült munkája nagyon veszélyes, így nincs szüksége semmire ami elvonná a figyelmét, azonban mikor Madison Haynes bekötözik a vele szembeni lakásba, egyszerűen nem tud ellenállni a késztetésnek, hogy megismerkedjen a gyönyörű, visszahúzódó, rejtélyes lánnyal. Madison egy enigma. Míg Ky-t szépen lassan, rétegről rétegre megismerjük, addig Madison végig nagyon-nagyon rejtélyes marad. Váltott szemszög van, mégis a fő szálat Ky viszi, Madison szemszögei néha csak néhány sorból állak, amely egy igazi kis mézesmadzagként szolgál. Igazából szinte végig nem tudtunk meg semmit a lányról, és Jay ezzel is el tudta érni, hogy ne tudjam letenni ezt a kötetet.
Ez a könyv, ahogy az írónő is ígérte az elején, nem egy újabb ‘fighter book’. Ez egy szépen lassan épülő történet, egy férfiról akinek sok minden kijutott az életben, és aki nagyon sok sebet hordoz magában, és egy rejtélyes lányról aki segít neki újra megtalálni az értelmet az életében. A mellékszereplők szerintem igazán jó el lettek találva, a kedvencem a pszichológus Dr. Cinnamon Aroma volt. 😀

A történet cliffhangerrel zárul, de az írónő a kötet végére még betett két fejezetet a sorozat második részéből, a Redemptive-ből is. És ez a két fejezet wow! Mindkettő Madison szemszögéből íródott, így megtudtunk néhány igen fontos dolgot róla és a múltjáról. És ha valaki a brutális cliffhanger után sem kiáltana egyből a következő kötetért, ezután a két fejezet után garantáltan egyből rá akarja majd tenni a mancsát a következő könyvre. Még szerencse, hogy nemsokára érkezik. 😉

My Review in English

Please next time remind me that never ever judge the book by its cover! Because Jay McLean did it again! This book of hers was pretty amazing too, despite this was so different from anything I’ve ever read from her. It was darker, it dealt with some serious issues, it was less humorous but it was suspenseful, thrilling, with so many secrets and mystery. I loved it!

Not so much after Kyler Parker returns home from his tour in Afghanistan, he gets into a big fight and he gets arrested. A young detective takes his case and it turns out that the detective is not other, but his younger brother Jackson ‘Jax’ Davis, who he hasn’t seen in five years. Jay offers a deal for Ky: If he goes undercover into a drug ring like an MMA fighter, he can avoid jail time. Ky takes the offer mostly because he would do anything for Jax and he wants to make up for all of his mistakes in the past. The story takes place mostly in the present, but sometimes we got glimpses of the past, too. I loved these parts because they gave an additional layer to the characters and the plotline of the present.

Ky’s new job obviously is very dangerous, so he doesn’t need any distractions, but when a Madison Haynes moves to the opposite apartment on the floor, he just can’t resist to learn more about this beautiful, shy, mysterious girl. Madison is an enigma. While we become to know Ky slowly layer by layer, Madison stays very cryptic for the whole book. The story is written in dual POV but the main thread is told by Ky’s point of view. Madison’s views are sometimes just a few lines and this mystery absolutely kept me on the edge of my seat and made me turning page after page in anticipation.

This book  – like the author promised us in the beginning –  is ‘not another fighter book’. This is a slow-building story about a man who has a very troubled and painful past and he carries so many scars, and a mysterious girl who helps him to find the meaning of his life again. The side characters were perfect, but my favorite one was absolutely was Dr. Cinnamon Aroma, the psychologist. 😀

The story ends with a cliffhanger, but Jay McLean was nice enough to put two additional chapters to the end of the book from Redemptive. And those two chapters are…wow! Both are from Madison’s POV and we can learn a lot of important information about her and her past. And if someone – by a really mysterious reason – won’t shout for the next book immediately after finishing Combative, I can guarantee that this two chapters from the second part of the series will make you want to grab the next book right away! Luckily Redemptive is coming soon! 😉
