Synopsis

When Mikayla imagined her prom night, she envisioned a fairy-tale evening full of romance. So when betrayal and tragedy come in quick succession, Mikayla is completely destroyed. Suddenly, everything she loved and everyone she relied on are tragically, irrevocably gone.

Jake, a handsome boy she just met, happens to witness her loss. With no one to turn to, Mikayla is forced to depend on this near stranger and his family, and he in turn is determined to take care of her. But Mikayla—thrust into adulthood with no one to guide her—is desperate to contain her grief and hide what she considers to be her weakness. Mikayla and Jake both want more, but despite their growing closeness and intense chemistry, she tries to keep her distance and protect her heart. As he does everything in his power to win her trust, Mikayla must choose between remaining alone and safe or letting love in.

Véleményem a könyvről

Azon ritka pillanatok egyike van, mikor magam is meglepődök a saját értékelésemen.. 🙂 Ennek egyszerűen az az oka, mert először picit nehéz volt megbarátkoznom a stílusával. (Igazából nem tudnám megmondani, hogy ennek mi volt az oka, az is lehet, hogy azért éreztem gyengébbnek, mert előtte pont egy Mia Sheridan könyvet olvastam. :)) De jó volt! Tényleg! Ez gyakorlatilag egy drámaibb háttérrel megírt Jessica Park: Flat-Out-Love. Néhol szomorú volt, néhol vicces, a karakterek pedig nagyon szerethetőek és egészen aranyosra sikerültek. Egyetlen hibája annyi volt, hogy nem volt túl hihető, de hát egy YA/NA könyvnél még ez is belefér.

A történet főszereplője Mikayla, aki közvetlenül a végzős bálja előtt, az étteremben kapja rajta a barátját a legjobb barátnőjével. Szegény ott sír a szép ruhájában az étterem folyosóján mikor befut Jake, a dögös, ausztrál akcentusos baseballsztár (ki más? :D) és mint a herceg a fehér lovon, szárnyai alá veszi a lányt. Igaz, hogy nem ismerik egymást, de a srác a barátaival együtt szintén a saját iskolájuk bálja előtti vacsorán vannak, így Jake meghívja Mikaylat a saját báljára, hogy kicsit felvidítsa a lányt. Jake barátai egyből megkedvelik Kayla-t és összességében egy elég vicces estét hoznak össze, amibe beépítenek egy balhét is, amelynek az újonnan ex-é vált fiú autója esik áldozatául.
A vidám este azonban hajnalban drámai fordulatot vesz és könnyóceánba fullad. (Igyekszem nem spoilerezni.) Mikayla-nak találnia kell egy helyet, ahol maradhat és Jake felajánlja, hogy aludhat náluk. Mivel nincs hová mennie, Jake családja végül véglegesen befogadja a lányt.

Jake és Mikayla között természetesen első pillanattól kezdve meg van a szikra és ez is egy tipikusan a YA könyvekben fellehető „insta-szerelem”-típusú történet. Nekem pontosan ezzel volt a legnagyobb problémám. Szerintem azokat az eseményeket követően, amelyeket Mikayla átélt,- kezdve azzal, hogy egyik pillanatról a másikra elvesztette nem csak a négy éve tartó kapcsolatát a fiújával, hanem a gyerekkori barátnőjét is, és a többi szomorú eseményről nem is beszélve-, egyszerűen nem hiszem, hogy a valóságban pont egy dögös baseballsztár járna bárki fejében is, bár tény és való, hogy nem rossz figyelemelterelés… 😉 Igazából örültem neki, hogy nem egy szomorú, depresszív történet sült ki ebből a könyvből, mert egy másik aspektusból, tízből kilencszer ez történt volna. Helyette egy aranyos történetet kaptunk, szerethető karakterekkel és sok-sok szexuális feszültséggel (maradjunk annyiban, hogy elég sokára tértek a lényegre.) Összességében attól eltekintve, hogy a való életben nem hiszem, hogy „ilyen könnyen” túl lehetne lépni azon, hogy a teljes világod a feje tetejére áll, nagyon jó kis történet volt ez.

Széljegyzet tőlem 

Valóban igaz, hogy az írásmód nem nyűgözött le a könyv elején, de teljes mértékben éreztem a fejlődést az írónő stílusában már ezen kötet alatt is, és meg kell hogy mondjam, hogy a többi kötettel együtt ez lett az egyik kedvenc New Adult sorozatom!
Ez volt az írónő első regénye és ilyen szempontból teljes mértékben megállja a helyét (talán egy picit ezért is voltam vajszívűbb a csillagozásnál)! Úgyhogy mindenkit biztatok, akinek esetleg ez kevésbé tetszett, hogy a negyedik részig (lassan az ötödikig) meg se álljon! 🙂

My Review in English

Okay, this book really surprised me. Why? Because at the beginning I didn’t exactly like the writing-style, so I almost put it aside. (To tell the truth I really don’t know why I felt this way in that moment, maybe because right before this book I just finished a Mia Sheridan book.) But after a very little time it really captured me and it was really good! It was like Flat-Out Love by Jessica Park just with a so much more dramatic plot line. There were really sad and touching parts of the book, but it was really humorous too, and I really loved the characters. The secondary cast of characters was outstanding! The one thing I didn’t really like, that it was absolutely unbelievable, but I think maybe in this YA/NA mixed genre it is acceptable.

The main character of the book is Mikayla, who finds out at a restaurant that her boyfriend of four years cheated on her with her best friend right before her senior prom. The poor girl just sits on the hallway of the restaurant in her beautiful dress and cries when the hot, Australian baseball star, Jake shows up (of course, who else? :D) and like a prince in his shiny armor (and with his sexy accent :)) puts Kayla under his wings. He is with his friends in the restaurant and actually they are just getting ready to leave for their own prom.  They don’t know each other but Jake invites Mikayla to his prom, to make her night a little brighter. Jake’s friends immediately come to like Mikayla and after all the bad things the night is full with fun, including a prank with the cheater ex-boyfriend’s truck. 🙂

But the fun night in the end gets a dramatic turn and it drowns into tears. (I try to stay spoiler free.) After that Mikayla has to find a place where she could stay so Jake’s family offers her to stay with them.

Jake and Mikayla find the spark and the connection from the very beginning, and this is a typical “instalove” kind of book.  And this was my biggest problem with this story. Because after the things that happened with Mikayla, started with losing not just her boyfriend of four years, but also her best friend and the other horrible events, I absolutely can’t imagine that in the reality would be a hot baseball star in her mind. It is really unauthentic and unbelievable, but I can agree that this is a pretty good distraction after all. 🙂

To tell the truth, in the end I am really glad that this book didn’t turn out as a depressive sad story, because from another aspect I think nine times out of ten this would be the case. Instead we got a really sweet story, with lovable characters and a loooots of sexual tension. (Let’s just say that they got to the point, after a really long time.)

So despite the fact that I think in reality no one could move forward so quickly after their word went upside down, I really liked it.

Side note from me

Yes, the writing style of the book was not perfect in the beginning, but during the book I really felt the development of it, and at the end it became pretty good! This was the debut novel of the author, so from this aspect this book was quite great! Since then I already read six books by Jay McLean and I loved all of them! Furthermore I really liked this book, but I have to say that I liked the other parts of the series even more, and the ‘More Than’ series became one of my most favorite New Adult series of all time!
