Szülei halála után Blythe McGuire-t mélybe húzza a gyász, alig bír a felszínen maradni, miközben a Matthews Egyetemen utolsó évén igyekszik átvergődni. Aztán egy véletlen találkozás belerántja a lányt valamibe, amire egyáltalán nem számított: tagadhatatlan vonzalmat érez a sötét hajú végzős, Chris Shepherd iránt, akinek múltja talán még sajátjánál is bonyolultabb. Ahogy a kapcsolatuk elmélyül, Chris magához téríti a lányt a bódulatból, ami azóta fojtogatja, hogy egy tűzeset megfosztotta a fél családjától. Blythe gyógyulni kezd, lassan meg is szereti a fiút, aki segít neki új utakat találni a gyönyörhöz és önmaga felfedezéséhez. Véleményem a könyvről

Most aztán bajban vagyok az értékeléssel, mert ezt a könyvet egyszerre imádtam és utáltam. Egyszerre volt átlagos és átlagon felüli. Egyik pillanatban imádtam szereplőket, a másikban meg jól képen akartam őket törölni. És pont amiatt, hogy ennyire meg tudta ráncigálni az érzelmeimet ez a könyv, egyszerűen nem adhatok 4.5 csillagnál kevesebbet, akkor sem, ha nem biztos, hogy megérdemli.

A könyvet a feléig imádtam. Picit ugyanolyan volt, mint minden más ilyen könyv (tragikus múltú fiú és lány összefut a kampuszon, egyből megvan a kapocs… stb), de valahogy mégis más volt. Azt hiszem leginkább a szereplők miatt, és ahogy a világot látják. Tetszett, hogy milyen szerethető és érdekes karaktereket kreált meg az írónő és imádtam az egész Shepherd családot. 🙂 És annak ellenére, hogy szinte mindegyik szereplő picit megtört valahol az úton, mégsem éreztem azt a klisé halmazt, amit pl. Jessica Sorensen könyveinél (no offense), de nem tudom megmagyarázni, hogy miért. Talán az írónő sokkal jobban meg tudta találni az egyensúlyt a fájdalomban, és a kapcsolatot a karakterek és az olvasó érzelmei között.

De nem fogok hazudni, a kötet fele után eljött egy pont, amikor nagyon mérges voltam, és fájt a történet alakulása. Legszívesebben odamentem volna és vertem volna egy kis észt a fejekbe, de az írónő végül annyira aranyos és vicces módon (és szerencsére viszonylag röviden) zárta le a könyv ezen szakaszát, hogy instant megbocsátottam neki.. 😀

A történet főszereplője Blythe, aki egy tűzeset következtében négy éve elveszíttette a szüleit. Már végzős az egyetemen, de még sincs egy barátja sem, a szobatársát „elüldözte” depressziós viselkedésével, és az öccsétől is teljesen eltávolodott. Aztán egyetlen egy nap alatt feje tetejére áll a világa, mikor a Shepherd család véletlenül berobban az életébe. Az első számú Shepherd testvér, akivel összehozza a sors Sabin, aki egyik hajnalon a kávézóban csakúgy levágja magát a lány mellé és ellopja a kávéját. Ő tipikusan az a szereplő, akit egy másodperc alatt megszeretsz és egy olyan karakter, akire biztosan sokáig emlékezni fogsz. Az idő többségében túl sok, túl harsány, túl vicces és túl imádnivaló, de hát ő mégiscsak egy színész.. 😀 Végül ő lesz Blythe legjobb barátja. (Azt hiszem a második kötetet róla fog szólni. Már alig várom! :)).

Még aznap hajnalban a kávé után a lány úgy dönt, hogy jár egyet a környéken és a kampusz melletti tóhoz sétál. Mikor odaér, meglát egy fiút, aki kavicsokkal kacsázik a tó vizén. Sokáig nézi a távolból, mikor egyszer csak fogja magát és odamegy hozzá. A lány nem tudja, hogy miért csinálja, hiszen soha nem szokott senkivel sem beszélni. Végül is jól sül el a dolog, mert úgy alakul, hogy összebarátkoznak a sráccal (aki kiderül, hogy a kávétolvaj Sabin bátyja), és együtt töltik a délelőttöt. Később a lány megismerkedik Chris és Sabin öccsével és húgával, akik ikrek és szintén nagyon jó karakterek, főleg Estelle (és az ő neon Jézusa a falon.. :p). Szóval kapunk egy nagyon összetartó, egyedi családot, aki felkarolja és befogadja Blythet és segítenek neki újra visszatalálni az életbe.

Nagyon tetszett, hogy szépen, lassan építkezett a történet és tele volt gyönyörű metaforákkal. Nem olyanokkal, amit csak úgy lenyom a torkodon az írónő, hanem pici apróságokkal. Őszintén szólva a Flat-Out Love nagyon tetszett, de nem győzött meg igazán az írónő tehetségéről (vagy legalábbis nem ilyen szinten). Jó volt, de kisarkítva valahol csak egy kis habkönnyű cukormáz. Viszont ez a könyv rengeteg érzelmet váltott ki belőlem és sokkal mélyebbnek és kidolgozottabbak éreztem. (Plusz a Flat-Out Love olyan szűziesre sikerült, hogy nem is gondoltam, hogy Jessica Park ilyen igényes, de nagyon szenvedélyes erotikus jeleneteket is tud írni. :))

Talán a könyv vége az, ami hozzátette a pluszt a csillagozásomhoz. Mert ott annyira gyönyörűen értek össze a szálak és annyira zseniálisan illeszkedik minden darabka a helyére, hogy azt tanítani lehetne. Egyszerűen imádtam ezt a részt! {A sebhelyet, a pólót, a tengeri sünt, a csipogót, a megmentőt, a maratont és egyszerűen azt, hogy a hitetlenségből végül mégis kikacsintgatnak a sorsra.
Lehet, hogy van, aki azt fogja mondani, hogy az írónő kicsit túlzásba esett a Shepherd-ek múltjával kapcsolatban. Talán így is van, de én elhiszem, hogy vagy vannak ilyen pszichopata szülők. Az meg, ahogy az évekkel későbbi hatását mutatta be a testvéreken, szerintem abszolút hitelt érdemlő volt. Mert a vidám külső alatt, mindegyikük megtört lélek.}

Összességében nekem tetszett és minden szenvedés (amit szereplők szenvedtek, és amit én magam miattuk :)) megérte. Nem volt tökéletes, sőt néha dühítő volt, de úgy érzem, hogy ez a könyv a hibái ellenére sok mondanivalót hordozott magában és igazán szép íve volt a történetnek, úgyhogy én mindenképpen ajánlom. 🙂

I’m in trouble with rating this book because I loved it and hated it at the same time. It was average and above average at the same time. One moment I loved the characters, and the other moment I wanted to slap them. And because this book could yank my emotions so well, I could not give less than 4.5 stars to this book, even if maybe it does not deserve it.

I loved the first part of the book. It was a little similar to other books in this genre (a boy and girl with tragic past meet at the campus, instant connection… etc.) but it was different in some way. I think maybe because of the characters and the way they see the world. I loved that the author created so interesting and loveable characters, and I loved the whole Sheperd family. 🙂 Despite the fact that every character is broken some way, I didn’t felt the weight of the tons of clichés like in other books, but I can’t tell you why that was. Maybe the author could find the perfect balance in the pain and in the connection between the character’s and the reader’s emotions.

But I will not gonna lie, after the first part of the book came a point where I was very furious and reading this book was really painful. I wanted to go there and put some brain in the heads. But finally the author closed this thread so funny and adorable way, that I had to forgive her immediately. 😀

The main character of the book is Blythe, who lost her parents in a fire 4 years ago. She is senior in the University, but she has no friend, her roommate moved out because her depressive attitude, and she has no real connection with her brother, either. But then her whole world goes upside down one day when the Shepherd family burst into her life. The first of the Shepherd siblings is with who the fate brings her together is Sabin. One day early morning in a coffee shop he sits at her table without question and steals her coffee. He is typically that character who you fell in love in a second and who you will remember for a long time. He is mostly too much, too uproarious, too funny, too lovable, but he is an actor after all… 😀 Finally he becomes the best friend of Blythe.

On the same morning Blythe decides that she takes a walk, so she goes to the nearby lake on the campus. When she arrives there, she sees a boy who is skipping stones. She watches him for a long time when suddenly she decides that she will go to him. She doesn’t knows why she feels she has to talk with him – since she never talks with anyone –, but finally it turns out well, because they become friends and they spends the day together. It turns out that Chris is the brother of the coffee-stealer Sabin, and they have two more siblings. I loved the twins so much, too, especially Estelle and her neon Jesus. 😀 They are a very unique and loyal family who embrace and take Blythe into their family and finally they help her find her way back to life.

I loved that this was a slow-building story with beautiful little metaphors. I only read Flat-Out Love series by the author and I liked it but to tell the truth it didn’t convinced me about the talent of the author, at least not this much. But this book brought out me a lot of emotions and I felt it much more deep. (And after the really virginal Flat-Out Love I really didn’t thought that Jessica Park can write so hot scenes. :D)

Maybe the ending was what added some plus for my rating. It was so beautiful how the threads connected at the end and it was genius how every little piece clicked to their places. I loved this part so much! {(Their matching scars, the sea urchin, the pager, the saviour, the Marathon, and that beyond their unbelief they finally start to believe in faith.)
Maybe somebody says that it was too much what the Shepherds got in the past. Maybe they are right, but I believe that there are so sick bastards who do these things whit their children. And I think that was so authentic how these things affect them after. Under the happy surface every one of them has a broken soul.}

On the whole I liked this book and every pain (what the characters felt and what I felt because of them) was worth it. I think it was beautiful how Blythe and the others found their ways to healing, to breathing and to live again. It was not perfect and sometimes it made me angry but I think it had a deep meaning so I truly recommend it.
