Kelly Oram – Cinder & Ella

Synopsis

It’s been almost a year since eighteen-year-old Ella Rodriguez was in a car accident that left her crippled, scarred, and without a mother. After a very difficult recovery, she’s been uprooted across the country and forced into the custody of a father that abandoned her when she was a young child. If Ella wants to escape her father’s home and her awful new stepfamily, she must convince her doctors that she’s capable, both physically and emotionally, of living on her own. The problem is, she’s not ready yet. The only way she can think of to start healing is by reconnecting with the one person left in the world who’s ever meant anything to her—her anonymous Internet best friend, Cinder.

Hollywood sensation Brian Oliver has a reputation for being trouble. There’s major buzz around his performance in his upcoming film The Druid Prince, but his management team says he won’t make the transition from teen heartthrob to serious A-list actor unless he can prove he’s left his wild days behind and become a mature adult. In order to douse the flames on Brian’s bad-boy reputation, his management stages a fake engagement for him to his co-star Kaylee. Brian isn’t thrilled with the arrangement—or his fake fiancée—but decides he’ll suffer through it if it means he’ll get an Oscar nomination. Then a surprise email from an old Internet friend changes everything.

Vajon képest a valóságban is tündérmesévé változtatni Ella életét?

Véleményem a könyvről

My Review in English

This book really surprised me. I was expecting a fluffy and cute Kelly Oram book, but this story has a really nice depth and some of it was really heartbreaking. Because of the weak book cover I didn’t even think that this story covers some really important topics, like school bullying, family abandonment, suicide, gay marriage and divorce. But on the other hand there are a lot of smiles, a fairytale kind of love, and a Cinderella adaptation with a stepmother and an evil twin sister.

The main character is Ellamara aka Ella who lives with her mom and her biggest passions are reading and blogging. She meets with Cinder on her book and movie review blog. After it turns out that they share their love for The Cinder Chronicles book series they start to chat a lot and they slowly become best friends and maybe a little bit more. After two years of texting and chatting with Cinder, a horrible thing happens. She gets into a terrible car accident in which she loses her mother. She has so major injuries that she has to stay at the hospital for eight months but some of her injuries and scars are permanent. When finally she can leave the hospital she is forced to stay with her father – who leaved them years ago – and with his new family. And in addition she has to attend to a new school with her step sisters, where everybody bullies her because of her crippling injuries.

Ella has to start again her life so she decides that she has to return to the online world, too. She starts again her blog and she reconnects with Cinder who actually thought that she may have died. Cinder is a humorous, smart, nice guy and he has everything that makes Ella’s heart to beat faster. But Ella doesn’t know his real name and she definitely doesn’t know that he is actually Brian Oliver, the Hollywood star.

Ella’s character is really inspiring. Her life is full of pain, disappointment and despair. She has to move to a new place with people who she doesn’t know and who she doesn’t like. Everybody hurts her emotionally and they don’t accept her, but despite this she is a very strong, nice, humorous girl and she has a beautiful soul. The relationship with her father has a hard start but they slowly rebuild it.

I loved Cinder, too. The banter between him and Ella was really sweet, and it made me smile a lot. 🙂 Maybe he was a little too perfect, but I loved that he always choses Ella over anything else despite all the pressure.

This book has the perfect balance of pain and seriousness, smile and fairytale, so I highly recommend it for everyone! 🙂

My Favorite Quotes From the Book

„The problem with fairy tales is that most of them begin with tragedy.”

“You do have someone who cares,” he said softly. “No matter how bad things are at home or at school or whatever, you have me.”

„Cinder458: I missed you more. You can’t ever disappear on me again. I need you, Ellamara, oh wise and beautiful mystic priestess of the Realm. I need your guidance and council.”

„A small piece of my dead heart came back to life, and I took what felt like my first real breath since the accident.”

„EllaTheRealHero: Sure you can, rock star. You wouldn’t know normal if it bit you on your ridiculously good-looking face.
Cinder458: You’ve never seen my face. How do you know it’s good-looking?
EllaTheRealHero: Because no ugly person could have an ego as big as yours.
Cinder458: You’re right. I’m gorgeous.”

„Funny, rich, hot, confident, book lover.
Definitely not my type. Nope. Not at all.
Yeah, okay, fine, so he wasn’t my type by default because he lived in California and I live in Massachusetts. Whatever.”

“She laughed and I smiled again. Her laugh was my new favorite sound in the whole world.”

“He was my ray of sunshine. He was the only thing that kept me sane.”

“This is all because some girl e-mailed you?”
“Ella’s not just some girl. She’s the girl. The only girl.”
