„Gazdag, több rétegű olvasmányélmény, könyvkluboknak is ajánlott történet.” – Library Journal

„Kristin Hannah a csúcsformáját hozta ezzel a regénnyel… Rabul ejti a rajongókat.” – The Seattle Times

Véleményem a Könyvről

Kedvenc idézeteim a könyvből

Synopsis

For a mother, life comes down to a series of choices.
To hold on…
To let go..
To forget…
To forgive…
Which road will you take?

For eighteen years, Jude Farraday has put her children’s needs above her own, and it shows—her twins, Mia and Zach—are bright and happy teenagers. When Lexi Baill moves into their small, close knit community, no one is more welcoming than Jude. Lexi, a former foster child with a dark past, quickly becomes Mia’s best friend. Then Zach falls in love with Lexi and the three become inseparable.

Jude does everything to keep her kids safe and on track for college. It has always been easy– until senior year of high school. Suddenly she is at a loss. Nothing feels safe anymore; every time her kids leave the house, she worries about them.

On a hot summer’s night her worst fears come true. One decision will change the course of their lives. In the blink of an eye, the Farraday family will be torn apart and Lexi will lose everything. In the years that follow, each must face the consequences of that single night and find a way to forget…or the courage to forgive.

NIGHT ROAD is vivid, emotionally complex novel that raises profound questions about motherhood, identity, love, and forgiveness. It is a luminous, heartbreaking novel that captures both the exquisite pain of loss and the stunning power of hope. This is Kristin Hannah at her very best, telling an unforgettable story about the longing for family, the resilience of the human heart, and the courage it takes to forgive the people we love.

My Review in English

Everyone is touched by a story differently, and it may also gives a reader a different experience depending in what situation the book finds us. This story found me in a time when it shredded me into little pieces like a tornado.  While reading the second half of the book, my tears were unstoppable, and I can’t remember when was the last time this happened to me.

The 14-year-old Lexi didn’t have an easy life.  In a large part of her childhood she lived under difficult circumstances sent from foster family to foster family until they found her deceased grandmother’s eldest sister, who, though had not much of her own either, still took her in. On the first day in her new high school she meets Mia Farraday, a somewhat eccentric, cute girl with whom she immediately finds the common voice and become best friends. Mia invites Lexi to their house that day, what is compared to the trailer park where Lexi lives, is a mansion. Mia has a twin brother Zach, with whom she has been inseparable since they were born, and who soon becomes the part of Lexi’s life, too. After a little time her feelings for the boy begin to go beyond mere friendship, but because of Mia’s friendship with her, she needs to hide them.

The other narrator of the book is Jude, Mia and Zach’s mother. We can learn about all the fears and caring of motherhood through her point of view. Jude was a really well-developed, complex character who sometimes I really liked, but sometimes I was so-so angry at her. Later there is a third narrator in the book what I found a really interesting solution, and what I truly liked.

I really liked the writing style of the author and she represented with outstanding talent what an unexpected tragic can do with a family. It was a painful, slow-building story with great characters and surprising twists. I loved the twin-connection between Zach and Mia and how the author could show us all the hardness, pain and fear of senior year.

Although overall I liked the ending of the book, to tell the truth it felt really rushed for me. This story built in a quite a slow pace on hundreds of pages, then in the last 20 pages the story suddenly sped up and all the threads have been closed. I missed at least an epilogue, that way maybe it wouldn’t have felt like the author just got tired of writing this story.

Despite all of that, this book was one of the most significant stories I read this year. Nowadays I rarely read family novels or contemporary fiction, but it felt really good to my soul now. This is a beautiful story about first love, friendship, family and grief that I highly recommend to everyone.

My Favorite Quotes From the Book

“In the sea of grief, there were islands of grace, moments in time when one could remember what was left rather than all that had been lost.”

“Maybe time didn’t heal wounds exactly, but it gave you a kind of armor, or a new perspective. A way to remember with a smile instead of a sob.”

“We are gonna be Harry and Hermione. Friends forever.”

“Maybe time didn’t heal wounds exactly, but it gave you a kind of armor, or a new perspective.”

“It isn’t about being at the same school or the same town or even the same room. It’s about being together. Love is a choice you make.”
