Ma ismét idegen vizekre evezünk Pierce Brown Vörös lázadás sorozatával, és teszünk egy gyors kiruccanást a Sci-Fi világába. 🙂 A saga első három kötete sorban elnyerte a 2014-es, 2015-ös és 2016-os Goodreads Choice Awards díjat, és elöljáróban annyit én is elmondhatok, hogy a műfaj rajongói biztosan nem fognak csalódni. A sorozat Dark Age címmel érkező 5. kötete 2019. február 12-én érkezik angol nyelven, amely itt már elő is rendelhető.
A könyvsorozat magyar nyelven is megjelent Pierce Brown Vörös lázadás címmel az Agave Könyvek gondozásban, 2014-ben.

A fiatal Darrow a Marson él, bányász, és Vörösnek született, a színekről elnevezett kasztokra épülő társadalom legalacsonyabb rétegébe. Fáradtságot nem ismerve kockáztatja az életét a beomló alagutak és lándzsaviperák közt abban a hitben, hogy sorstársaival lakhatóvá teszi a bolygó felszínét a jövő generációi számára. Darrow még sosem látta a szabad égboltot, ám a kötelességét mégis teljesíti, mert reméli, hogy emberfeletti munkájával a saját gyermekeinek is jobb életet teremt. Egy nap azonban megtudja, hogy a Vörösök elől eltitkolják az igazságot, ugyanis a Mars felszíne már alkalmas az emberi életre. Méghozzá nem is akármilyenre.
Igazságot követelve a kasztjának és bosszúra szomjazva meggyilkolt szerelme miatt Darrow csatlakozik a földalatti ellenálláshoz, hogy megdöntse az Aranyak zsarnoki uralmát. S céljának elérésében semmi sem gátolhatja meg… Még az sem, hogy olyanná kell válnia, mint gyűlölt ellenségei.
Véleményem a könyvről
Pierce Brown-t lehetne azzal gyanúsítani, hogy egy sokadik Az éhezők viadala klónt tett le az asztalra, csak ezúttal poszt-apokaliptikus helyett sci-fi felütéssel, tragikusan elhunyt apa helyett egy másik hozzátartozó kegyetlen halálával. Lehetne, de nem jogosan: a Vörös lázadás mint a regényciklus alfája ugyanis – bár régről ismert elemekből is építkezik – karakteres és egyedi alkotás.
Az egyik ilyen régről ismert elem a kasztrendszer, ugyanis a főszereplő, Darrow egy vörös, vagyis a színekre épülő rendszer legaljáról származik. A vörösök pedig azok a marsi bányászok, akik egész életükben az éhhalál küszöbén, egymással is versengve nyersanyagokat gyűjtenek azért, hogy a bolygó a jövőben terraformálható legyen. Ám – ahogy erre Darrow is rádöbben – a Mars már évszázadok óta lakható, a többi kaszt pedig generációk óta gyakorlatilag rabszolga sorban tartja a vörösöket – élükön az aranyakkal.
Brown társadalmi rendszere átgondolt, de nem túlgondolt, jó érzékkel vegyíti a technológia által elérhető lehetőségeket az intergalaktikus hatalomgyakorlás szociológiai és gyakorlati problémáival, eközben viszont történetmesélése lebilincselő, az általa megformált, hol az űrben, hol pedig a bolygókon játszódó csatajelenetek vitán felül a sci-fi irodalom legjobbjai közé tartoznak.
Emellett a szerző komoly gondot fordít a karakterek megformálására, Darrow jellemfejlődése pedig tanítani való példa, rendkívül érdekes látni, hogy a tizenéves pokolfúróból hogyan finomodik szinte oldalról-oldalra a jelleme, és hogyan válik végül a címben is jelzett lázadás vezetőjévé úgy, hogy eközben belső, toposz-jellegű motivációi igazából, lényegüket tekintve nem változnak.
Külön szót érdemel még az ókori görög-római kultúra elemeinek szisztematikus beépítése a történetbe, amely kifejezetten egyedi ízt ad a már egyébként is letehetetlen sorozatnak.
Összességében a Vörös lázadás sorozat – egyelőre ide nem értve a részemről még nem olvasott, negyedik kötetet – vitán felül az elmúlt évek egyik legegyedibb sci-fi ciklusa, amit bátran ajánlok a műfaj kedvelőinek.

Pierce Brown hajlandó volt elvállalni bármit, mielőtt megélhetett az írásból: közösségi médiával foglalkozott egy startup vállalkozásnál, kuli munkákat végzett az ABC Studios Disney részlegében, kifutófiú volt az NBC-nél, és még egy szenátusi választásban is segédkezett az amerikai kormánynak.
A Vörös lázadás az első regénye, és már a megjelenése előtti hónapokban sokan felfigyeltek rá, így aztán nem volt meglepő a robbanásszerű sikere, miután a kötet kikerült a könyvesboltok polcaira. 2014 végén az olvasók szavazatai alapján elnyerte vele a legnagyobb nemzetközi könyves közösségi oldal, a Goodreads díját a legjobb elsőkönyves szerző kategóriában. Ezt követően jelent meg az Arany háború című folytatás, ami megismételte az első rész sikerét, sőt, jócskán túl is szárnyalta. Brown ismét elnyert érte egy Goodreads-díjat, ezúttal a legjobb sci-fi kategóriában.
Brown nemrég fejezte be a trilógiát a Hajnalcsillag című harmadik résszel, és most az egész világ arra kíváncsi, hogy fognak-e filmet forgatni belőle. S persze, hogy Brown mivel folytatja ezután.

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations.
Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.
But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity already reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.
Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. My Review in English
One could say that Pierce Brown could only manage to write a cheap The Hunger Games clone, only with a sci-fi setting (not post-apocalyptic), and with a different loved one’s death at the beginning. One could say that, but it would simply be false: Red Rising, as the first book of the series – although it builds from well-known elements – is a distinguishable and original work.
One of these well-known elements is the caste system, since our hero, Darrow is a Red; he belongs to the very bottom of society. Reds are the Martian miners, who are gathering resources trough their whole lives, on the verge of starvation and in constant conflict even within their own kind, so Mars could be terraformed one day. But – as Darrow is forced to face – Mars is habitable for centuries now, and the other colours are practically using the Reds as slaves since then – with the Golds on the top of the castes.
The societal structure which Brown has created is well-structured but not overcomplicated, he mixes the opportunities of technological advancement with the sociological and practical problems of intergalactic governance with a firm hand, and still his storytelling is gripping, and the battle scenes he paints – taking place in space or on land – are from the best of sci-fi literature.
Additionally the author builds up his characters with much care, Darrow’s character development is astonishing, and it is very interesting to see how he becomes from a teenage helldiver to the leader of a revolution, noticeably advancing almost from page to page. Still, his inner, topical motivations remain untouched.
It must be noted that the systematic infusion of the elements of ancient Greek/Roman culture gives a very characteristic face to the story.
All in all, the Red Rising series – the fourth book not included, because sadly I couldn’t get my hands on that one – is beyond dispute one of the most original sci-fi series of the past years, which I can surely recommend.
