I hurt. I hurt so deeply, I felt the pain searing in my bones and jabbing like a hot poker into my heart. I knew nothing would make it better as the memories pulled from the crevices of my mind, detailing the bad and the ugly, filling my thoughts with regret as I slipped into the darkness. . .
When I was eight, my mother was dying of cancer, my father lost his job, and the bank kicked us out of our house. I was forced to move to the strange town of Arlis, Texas where my father and I slept in our car in the hospital parking lot. Desperate and hopeless, we lived on fumes of our former life.
Then one night, everything changed forever. A knock on the car window brought a family into my life that I only wanted to shut out. I hated charity and I hated the Masons. Well, except one. He made it impossible to hate him.
Jess Mason had the biggest blue eyes and ornery smile of any boy I had ever seen. He was a ray of sunshine in my dark world. A boy full of adventure, dragging me across the meadow of Sprayberry Ranch; a beautiful Texas paradise full of horses and tree houses that got us into more trouble than anyone ever imagined.
Jess was my everything as a kid until we grew up and the rules changed. Instead of living happily ever after with a boy full of love. . . I destroyed it.

Na, most vagyok bajban az értékeléssel… Mert egyfelől jó volt, komoly volt, bőven volt mondanivalója, voltak benne igazán szerethető pillanatok, ugyanakkor ott van a másik oldal, hogy sokszor nem értettem egyet a lány döntéseivel, sőt abban sem vagyok biztos, hogy egyáltalán megkedveltem-e őt a könyv végére. Egy biztos, hogy maradandó könyvélményben volt részem, viszont azt érdemes előre leszögezni: aki egy édes romantikus könyvet szeretne olvasni, számára nem ez lesz a befutó. Ez egy nagyon lassan építkező, komoly kötet és sok-sok kört kell lefutni ahhoz, hogy Alex és Jess végre megtalálja az egymáshoz vezető utat.
Ez a könyv különleges és az egyediségét talán legjobban a felépítése adja. Ugrálunk az időben. Sokat. A könyv hol a jelenben, hol a múltban játszódik, de egy idősíkon belül is vannak kisebb-nagyobb ugrások. A jelenben ez órákban mérhető, a múltban pedig években. A könyv a jelenben kezdődik, méghozzá a főszereplő lány, Alex idegösszeomlásával. Nem tudjuk mi történt, csak annyit, hogy valami nagyon rossz. A jelen innentől kezdve két napot foglal magába, amiből egy nap szinte csak a néhány tiszta pillanat, amikor a benyugtatózott lány néha-néha feleszmél delíriumos álmából.
A múlt Alex emlékeit meséli el. Alex (Alexandra) egykor egy nagyon boldog kislány volt. Élte a kis mesebeli világát, a kis mesebeli házukban, a mesebeli kertjükben, ahol azt képzelte, hogy ő egy hercegnő. Aztán az anyukája beteg lesz, az apukáját a sok hiányzás miatt elküldik a munkahelyéről, majd jönnek a számlák, el kell adniuk a házukat, el kell költözniük egy másik városba ahol először egy koszos motelben húzzák meg magukat, majd végül a kocsijukban kell élniük a kórház parkolójában, míg az anyukát egy adomány segítségével ingyenesen ápolják bent. Ez így megy egy hónapig, amikor egyik nap az anyuka egyik orvosa, dr. Mason meg nem látja őket és nyomorúságos életüket. És itt jön a csoda. A Mason család az egyik legtehetősebb Texasban, akik egy hatalmas ranchot és olajfúró kutakat birtokolnak. Felajánlják a segítségüket a kétségbeesett apukának és a 8 éves kislánynak. Ételt és szállást adnak nekik a ranchon és gyakorlatilag egy új élet lehetőségét. Minden ingyen adnak nekik, nem várnak cserébe semmit. Adnak új kocsit, ruhákat a kislánynak, beiskolázzák Alexet, magántanárokat szereznek, elviszik kirándulni. Mire a lány leérettségizik, már egy hosszú-hosszú lista gyűlik össze arról, amit a családtól kaptak. Alex gyűlöli ezt. A kiszolgáltatottságot, és a jótékonyságot. Nagyjából 10 éves korában elhatározza, hogy minden egyes centet vissza fog majd fizetni a Mason-éknek, ezért írja a „Mason List”-et.
Mikor az első nap a kórházban megtörténik a „csoda” és feltűnik dr. Mason és a felesége, velük van a 8 éves kisfiuk is, Jess. Alex és Jess egyből megtalálják a közös hangot. Jess-t nem érdeklik Alex koszos, rongyos ruhái, csak játszani szeretne, innentől kezdve pedig elválaszthatatlanok egymástól. Legjobb barátok lesznek, és mindenféle bajba keverednek együtt. Jess-t imádtam. A kék szemű, folyton mosolygó fiú, csupa vidámság és kaland, és örök életében szerelmes Alexbe. A lány viszont nagyon sokáig küzd az érzéseivel, sokszor összetöri Jess szívét, és képes inkább elmenni több ezer mérföldre tőle, csak hogy ne adhassa hozzá Jess-t is “Mason List”-hez.
Alex teljesen megszállottjává válik a listának. Megtört a büszkesége és nagyon mélyek a sebek, amiket hordoz magában. Az írónő elképesztő tehetséggel mutatta meg a kislány szemével azt a kétségbeesést és kilátástalanságot, amit átéltek. A könyv nagy részében egy csomót éreztem a gyomromban és az kívántam, hogy legyen már vége a könyvnek, legyen meg végre a Happy End. Ugyanakkor ezt a kívánságomat beárnyékolták a jelenben játszódó fejezetek, hiszen végig ott volt bennem a kétely, hogy lesz-e egyáltalán boldog befejezés? Mi történhetett, ami ennyire összetörte Alexet?
Ajánlom ezt a könyvet, mert igazán mélyen meg tudott érinteni, de sokszor fájdalmas volt ez az utazás. Ha minden igaz, a magyar jogokat már megvette a WOW Kiadó, úgyhogy remélem hamarosan Magyarországon is sok mindenkinek lesz lehetősége arra, hogy olvashassa. A Goodreadsen igazán magas értékelést kapott, de úgy gondolom, hogy elég megosztó lesz ez a történet. Nagyon kíváncsi leszek, hogy kinek hogy fog tetszeni.

My Review in English
I’m in trouble with reviewing this book, because on the one hand it was really good, it contained meaningful thoughts, it had a lot of lovable moments. But there there’s the other side that most of the time I just couldn’t agree with Alex’s decisions, and I’m not sure I even became like her at the end of the book. One thing is certain: I got a really deep and meaningful experience, but I have to tell you, if you want to read a simple sweet and romantic story, I think maybe this is not your book. This is a slow-building, serious story, and we have wait a lot before Alex and Jess finally find the way to each other.
This book was really unique, partly because of the structure of the book. There are time jumps. A lot of time jumps. The story is split into two parallel timelines, one in the present and one in the past, but there are little or big time jumps in the same timeline, too. In the present these time jumps are minutes or hours, in the past these are years. The story starts in the present with the nervous breakdown of the main character, Alex (Alexandra). We don’t know what happened to her just that something really bad. The present contains about two days, and the first day is nearly just a few clear moments when she wakes up from her drugged delirium.
The chapters of the past tell us about Alex’s past. Alex was a really happy little girl once. She lived her fairytale kind of life, in her fairytale kind of house, in her fairytale kind of garden and she imagined that she is princess. But one day, her mom gets sick, because of the lot of missed days her dad loses his job, than the bills constantly come, and finally they have to sell their house and move to another town. Firstly, they move to a dirty motel room, but after they have been kicked out from there, too, they have to live in their car at the hospital’s parking lot, while her mother is dying inside. One month pasts this way, when one of her mother’s doctors, dr. Mason sees them and their miserable life in the parking lot. And a miracle happens. The Masons are one of the wealthiest families in Texas. They have a ranch and oil drills. They want to help the 8-year-old little girl and her father, so they give them a house on the ranch, food, car, new clothes, they pay for Alex’s schooling and her private lessons and they take her for trips, so they gave them a possibility for a new life. They give them all of this for free and they don’t expect anything in return. But Alex hates this. She hates the vulnerability and charity. When she is about ten years old, she decides that she will pay back every cent for the Masons, so she starts to write the “Mason List”, and by the time Alex is graduates from high school, the list is already really-really long.
When dr. Mason and her wife shows up at the hospital the first day of the “miracle”, they bring their eight years old son, Jess, too. Alex and Jess immediately find the connection. Jess doesn’t care about Alex’s dirty clothes; he just wants to have fun and wants to play. After that day they become best friends, they get into a lot of trouble together, and they become inseparable.
I loved Jess so much! The boy with the blue eyes and the goofy smile was always so funny and adventurous, and he loved Alex in all of his life, although the girl fought with her feelings for a long time, and she broke Jess’s heart so many times. She rather moved from him thousands of miles away, just to avoid adding Jess to the “Mason List”.
Alex becomes obsessed with the list. She has a broken pride and deep scars in her soul. The author could perfectly show us with the little girl’s eyes how much despair and hopelessness they had to experience. I felt a knot in my stomach almost constantly while reading this book and I wished it was over and just be a happy end. But at the same time this wish was darkened by the chapters of the present, because I felt the doubt: will there be an ending happy at all? What happened that could broke Alex so much?
I recommend this book because it could truly touch me, but mostly it was a painful journey.

Currently, her days are spent teaching computer software to oil and gas companies as well as writing technical instructional manuals. The Mason List is her first novel and it was started during National Novel Writing Month.
