Van egy furcsa dolog velem kapcsoltban. Az esetek kb. 80 %-ában nem olvasom el a fülszövet, csak megbízok a Goodreads értékelésben és meglátjuk mi lesz. Szeretem belevetni magam a szürke homályba és én magam kibontani a történetet, szeretem a meglepetéseket, a kalandot amelyet az ismeretlen tartogat számomra, (vagy lehet, hogy csak szeretek veszélyesen élni… :D) Mindegy is, a lényeg, hogy mint sejthetitek, ezúttal sem olvastam el a fülszöveget, csak tudni akartam, hogy megérdemli-e ez a könyv azt a hatalmas hypeot amit a megjelenésekor, és utána tapasztaltam. Aztán ezek után elég nagy arculcsapás volt az első mondat:

„On a sunny Tuesday morning towards the end of March, a white-haired man walked into a cold room and told me I might die soon.”

Erős felvezető igaz? De tény, hogy ebből az egy sorból nagyjából el tudod helyezni a könyvet a műfajok sorában és sejtheted, hogy nem egy kis nyári románc történetét kapod (vagy talán nem olyan formában, ahogy eredetileg gondoltad).

Nem arról van szó, hogy nem szeretném az ilyen történeteket, hiszen ez is az élet része és úgy gondolom, hogy ahhoz, hogy tisztán és kompletten lásd az életet, ugyanúgy olvasnod kell betegségről vagy halálról és tragédiákról is, mert az élet nem csak cukormáz, ezt mindenki tudja. De én úgy érzem, már megtaláltam az etalonok etalonját ebben a műfajban, (és nem, nem a Csillagainkban a hiba az, habár azt is nagyon szerettem) hiszen a {Bright Side} már egyszer fogta és darabokra törte a szívemet, így ez a könyv már nem tudott igazán újat mutatni. Mégis úgy gondolom csodálatos gondolatokat tartogatott ez a történet, és rengeteg mondanivalója volt. De ismeritek azt az érzést mikor egyfelől nagyon tetszik a könyv, másfelől viszont nagyon nem, és legszívesebben félbehagynátok? Mikor érzitek, hogy nagyon kellene szeretni az adott könyvet, de egyszerűen csak nem talál el úgy ahogy kellene? Na nálam ez a kötet, ez a kategória volt. Egyszerre imádtam és utáltam. Egyszerre volt vidám és szomorú. Nem tudom, hogy csak azért tetszett kevésbé, mert nem volt hozzá annyira hangulatom, vagy más miatt, de egy teljes ellentmondást hagyott maga után…

A 24 éves Summer egy ritka veleszületett betegséggel küzd. Sérült a nyelőcsöve, ami miatt nem tud enni. Kívül is és belül is sebeket hordoz magán, mégis megpróbál vidám, teljes életet élni. 3 hónappal későbbre kiírnak egy életmentő műtétet számára, amely során megpróbálják megműteni a nyelőcsövét és gyomrát, mert most gyakorlatilag a toxinok folyamatosan mérgezik a testét, ami hamarosan a halálához vezetne. Egyetlen nyara van, hogy lelkileg felkészüljön sorsának alakulására. Nem tudja, hogy ez lesz-e az utolsó nyara, csak annyit tud, hogy soha nem volt még szerelmes, így ezt az egy dolgot meg akarja tapasztalni, akár meghal, akár nem. Letölt egy randi applikációt a telefonjára, amely segítségével megismerkedik Cooperrel. Coop egy nagyon helyes, ugyanakkor elveszett fiú, aki beteg édesanyját gondozza, és egy igazi író. Őt nem zavarják Summer sebhelyei vagy a betegsége (habár a műtétről nem tud), egyszerűen meglátja mindazt a jóságot és belső szépséget, ami a lányból árad. Summer segít megtalálni Coopernek a sötétségből kivezető utat és egy gyönyörű nyár alatt szépen szerelembe esnek egymással.

Summer egy nagyon sokrétű karakter. Egyszerre volt humoros, szarkasztikus és cinikus, akit idegesít mindenki, aki a Facebookra posztolgatja, hogy éppen eljegyezték/megházasodott/gyereke született, ugyanakkor rendkívül önzetlen és segítőkész. Cooper pedig egy igazi filozófus. Rengeteg gyönyörű gondolat lakozik a lelkében, nem is meglepő hogy egy író.

Seth King egyébként azt hiszem rendkívüli módot utálja a Facebookot, mert körülbelül minden 5. oldalon meg vannak említve a Facebookra posztolgató menyasszonyok, és mindenki aki ott éli a szociális életét. Én Magyarországon nem érzem ennyire tragikusnak a helyzetet, de lehet, hogy csak jó ismerőseim vannak.. 😀

Kicsit elkalandoztam, de vissza a történethez… Sokszor el van mondva, hogy „ez nem egy újabb rákos könyv” de valóban nem az? Bármilyen betegségről vagy balesetről is legyen szó – és bármi is legyen a végkimenetele-, pont annyira megrendítő akárhányszor is olvasok róla.
{És igazából nagyon gonosz ez a könyv, mert elhiteti veled, hogy ez tényleg nem egy rákos lány haldoklásáról szól, hogy csak egy műtétről van szó és, hogy simán túl fogja élni és megkapják a sráccal a happy endjüket, hogy igenis megkapja majd a Facebookra posztolható fehér ruhás esküvőjét és a jövőjét.}

{Pont emiatt a könyv vége számomra nagyon megrendítő volt},sőt elmennék abba az irányba, hogy nekem már meredek volt a befejezés. Ennek ellenére, mégis meglepő, hogy az egyedüli amit megkönnyeztem, az a „Author’s Note” rész volt. Nem fogom elmondani, hogy mi állt benne, de tényleg nagyon megható volt.

És tudjátok, hogy min döbbentem le leginkább? Hogy ez az író pont annyi idős mint én, sőt majdnem akkor van a szülinapja mint nekem, mégis hihetetlen mély gondolkodása van. Olyan gyönyörű gondolatok és költemények voltak ebben a könyvben, hogy egy filozófia szakos hallgató is lázba jött volna tőle. Azt hiszem ez a srác már sok mindent láthatott az életben.

Összességében szép volt ez a történet, sok szép gondolattal. Mindenkinek ajánlom, akit nem riaszt vissza a műfaj, mert maradandó élményben lesz része.

There is a strange thing about me. Usually, I don’t read the blurb of the book before reading, I just trust the Goodreads rating and I just wait and see what turns out of it. To tell the truth I don’t know why, maybe because I like to jump to the unknown and fold the story myself, maybe I like the adventure of the unknown, maybe I like surprises or maybe I just like living dangerously. 😀 This is not really important, the point is – like you probably already have found out – that I didn’t read the synopsis this time neither. So it was a very hard slap on my face when I read the first line of the book:

„On a sunny Tuesday morning towards the end of March, a white-haired man walked into a cold room and told me I might die soon.”

It is a tough start, isn’t it? After that you could probably found out the exact genre of the book, so you can guess that it will be not a light summer romance (or not that kind that you would think).

Not that if I don’t like these kind of books, I do. I think that everybody has to read about illness, death, tragedy to a full view, because this is part of life and not everything is a piece of cake, obviously. But I think I already found the best of the bests in this genre (end no, it is not the Fault in Our Stars, despite that I loved that book, too), but I already read {Bright Side}which broke my heart into little pieces, and that is one of my favorite books. I think after that journey The Summer Remains cannot show me anything new.

Although I think this book contains wonderful thoughts.. But you know that kind of book that you like and dislike at the same time? When you think that you should love it, but for some reasons you just can’t love it with all your heart? This was THAT kind of book for me. I don’t know if that was because I was not in the mood for this book, or because I was so mad about the things that happened in there, or because something else, but this book was a full contradiction for me.

24 years old Summer has a rare illness. She has born with a broken throat, and because of that she can’t eat solid food at all. She wears scars outside and inside, too, but she tries to live a full, happy life. She needs a life-saving surgery at the end of the summer because her body is slowly poisoning her with toxins and this causes a life-threatening condition for her. She has three months to prepare herself for her faith. She doesn’t know that this will be her last summer or not, but she knows that she’s never been in love before, so maybe this is the last chance for her for falling in love. She downloads a date app on her phone, and with the help of this she meets with Cooper. Coop is a very handsome, but really lost boy, who takes care of her sick mom. He is not bothered by Summers’s scars, he simply sees every beauty and goodness in her. Summer helps him to find the way out of the darkness, and during a beautiful summer they slowly fell in love with each other.

Summer is a really complex character. She is cynic, sarcastic and she is really annoyed with everybody who posts Facebook posts all the time about his/her engagement/wedding/newborn and lives social life there. But at the meantime she is really selfless and full of goodness. Cooper is a true philosopher, he has beautiful and deep thoughts all the time, and it is not a surprise that he is a real writer.

I suspect that Seth King really hates Facebook, because he wrote about the stupid Facebook chicks on every fifth page. 😀 I don’t think that the case is so dramatic in Hungary, or maybe I just have great friends. 😀

In the book you can find the line “This Is Not A Cancer Book”. But it really isn’t? Because I could read any kind of illness, accident, tragic – be anything the outcome – if it is about a young life it stabs me in the heart the same way every single time. {And this book is the meanest in a way, because it makes you believe that this is really not that kind of book. This is not about a girl with a cancer who slowly fades away. You believe that she will have only one surgery and after that she will get her happy ending and her Facebook-wedding with the boy. And because of that, the ending of the book shattered me deeply, and it broke my heart.} And maybe I can say that the ending was upsetting for me. The strangest thing was, that against all, the one thing that truly brings tears in my eyes was the “Authors Note” part of the book. I will not tell you what is in it, but it is truly touching.

The author is at the same age as me (surprisingly our birthday is very close, too), yet he has really deep thinking. He writes down so beautiful thoughts and poems in this book! Every word of him has a really deep meaning and he has a high talent and a beautifully writing style. I recommend this book for everyone who are not afraid of the subject because it is guaranteed that everyone gets a memorable journey with this book.

Four- Glowing- Stars

“We freefell for a few moments, and just as my stomach got that gross falling feeling, we hit the water with dual thuddy-splashy sounds. Immediately we started rising and falling with the waves, out in the middle of the sea. It was weird, and fun, and I had never done anything like it before. There was this greenish glow on Cooper’s face from the stars, and he was just beautiful.

“Look down,” he whispered, and so I looked down and gasped again. “It’s phosphorescent plankton,” he said as I stared at my glow-in-the-dark skin. You know how little bubbles form on the inside of a champagne glass and then rise to the surface? That’s what was happening, except they were forming on my skin in a beautiful neon green color, and then they’d, like, zigzag away from me whenever I moved. My skin was sparkling, and for all the world it looked like I was emitting little green champagne bubbles.

“My friends and I learned about this the first time we broke into the pier after dark and drunkenly jumped off,” Cooper explained. “We looked down and noticed that we’d lit up like fireworks. It was crazy, and we’ve been doing pier jumps every year since then.” He paused and licked his lip. “But anyway, now you can see what I see. You were wrong, Summer: you do glow.”
