B.N. Toler – Where One Goes

Synopsis

What happens when the very thing ruining your life ends up saving it?

I was never one to believe in spirits—until six years ago, when a bone-chilling accident changed my life… forever.

My name is Charlotte, but most people call me Char… and I have a special gift.

I talk to the dead.

Make no mistake, I can’t summon them. I’m only able to see and speak to the spirits that linger when they’re unable to crossover. They’re somehow weighted to the world with unfinished affairs. And for the last six years, I’ve relentlessly used my gift to help their lost souls.

But it’s come at a price. My life is dark. Feeling despondent, I’ve begun to give up. And in helping the dead, I’ve realized I haven’t allowed myself to live. With no money, no place to go, and most importantly… no hope, I’ve decided there is only one option—to end it all.

But fate is a funny thing. One minute, I’m about to leap to my death, and the next, I’m saved by Ike McDermott. The strong, striking soldier stopped me from putting an end to my despair. He’s the kind of man that smiles and brightens an entire room.

Sweet and gentle.

He is my savior.

And he’s dead.

We’ve made an agreement. He’ll help me find a place to stay and a new job if I’ll help him with his unfinished business so that he may crossover.

Ike’s unfinished matter involves his twin brother, George. George has been falling apart since Ike’s death and Ike has not been able to compel himself to crossover in peace until he knows George will be okay.

When I agreed to help, little did I know that I’d fall in love with the charming folks of Bath County, and… Ike and George McDermott.

Now, as both brothers own equal parts of my heart, I am faced with a cruel and unfair predicament. In saving George, I must let go of Ike.

But how does one let go of half of their heart?

Véleményem a könyvről

Ike és George nagyon különbözik egymástól, de mindkettejüket másért lehet szeretni. {Igen volt szerelmi háromszög a történetben, de igazából mégsem, hiszen bármennyire kívánunk más jövőt Ike-nak, már a kezdetektől tudjuk, hogy egyszer eljön a búcsú pillanata, így gyakorlatilag a “választás” előre meg van írva. Bár őszintén szólva végig azon drukkoltam, hogy legyen valami csavar a történetben és Ike mellett kössön ki a lány.}

My Review in English

My review contains SPOILERS between curly brackets. If you want to read it, please highlight it!

This was such a beautiful and unique story! This book was full with touching and humorous moments and it was so captivating that I just couldn’t put it down. I loved every line of it! This book broke my heart than put together the pieces on a memorable emotional journey.

Charlotte ‘Char’ Acres has a special ‘gift.’ After she almost died six years ago in an accident, she sees the dead. Unfortunately this ability caused her only pain and unhappiness because she lost her family and her friends because of that. So six years ago she left behind her home and her family and since then she just travels across the country alone every now and then helping to the dead to resolve their unfinished business.

After Charlotte helps a girl to cross over to the other side she feels that this is her last mission and she doesn’t want to live anymore. She climbs up on a bridge and she wants to jump when Ike McDermott shows up. Ike lost his life in Afghanistan and he is stuck on Earth, too. He saves Char and he offers her a deal. If she helps him with his “unfinished business” in exchange he helps her find a job and a place to stay in his hometown. Ike’s “unfinished business” is George, his twin brother. After Ike’s death George struggles with grief so he turnes to the drugs and he tries to find his oblivion in another men’s women.

Ike can’t leave this place until he knows that George finds his way back to the right road. Ike and George had a restaurant, and this is the place where Ike helps her to get a job as a waitress with a little trick. 🙂 Charlotte finds her place in Warm Springs soon, and she also slowly finds love.

Ike and George is so different from each other, but I loved them for different reasons. { Yes, there is a love triangle in this book, but actually it isn’t, because it doesn’t matter how much we wish another future for Ike, we know that the moment will come when we have to say goodbye to him. So practically the choice is per-written. Although I truly hoped that it will be some twist in the end of the book and Ike and Char will get their happy ending.}

Every character had grown very close to my heart and this is typically that story which in one moment breaks your heart and in the other moment warms it. This beautifully-written story shows us how to deal with loss and how we can move on.

My Favorite Quotes From the Book

„This isn’t a life—it’s a nightmare. A never-ending torment of death and servitude. And the pain has become too much to bear.”

‘How do I move on without a complete heart? How do I navigate through life with nothing but an empty chest of what-if’s?’

They’re both in leaking boats, and I’ve asked Charlotte to get in George’s and help him bucket out the water while her boat steadily sinks.

“Maybe you’re broken, but so am I. Broken doesn’t mean we’re valued any less, it just means we’ve loved someone so much and so fiercely that losing them feels like we’ve lost part of ourselves. I don’t want to lose you, too.”

“I’m sorry I can’t take you in my arms right now and hold you. I’d sell my soul to the devil if I could, Charlotte.”

“Sometimes I don’t realize how badly I need something until I see someone else with it.”

“You weren’t given a choice, Charlotte. The choice is already made.”

„Both Ike and George look alike, but their smiles are different. When Ike smiles, it feels real, like his happiness is his aura. It feels like a warm, sunny beach when you’ve seen nothing but snow and ice for months. When George smiles, it’s a gift. It’s like the way the sun peeks through storm clouds. It feels like hope.”

“Would you dance with me tonight if you could?”
His brows rise, surprised by my question. Standing, he looks down at me, his expression serious.
“Every fucking song.”

”He saved me so I could save you, which in a way means, you saved me too.”

”I want so badly for George to be better, to be happy, but his happiness involves him having something I would sell my soul to have.”

“In Ike, I see hope. I see that maybe with enough love, being saved is possible.”
