Amy Harmon – The Songbook of Benny Lament – Review

Synopsis

From the bestselling author of What the Wind Knows and From Sand and Ash comes a powerful love story about a musical duo who put everything on the line to be together.

New York, 1960: For Benny Lament, music is his entire life. With his father’s deep ties to the mob, the Bronx piano man has learned that love and family can get you in trouble. So he keeps to himself, writing songs for other musicians, avoiding the spotlight…until the night his father brings him to see Esther Mine sing.

Esther is a petite powerhouse with a gorgeous voice. And when Benny writes a hit song and performs it with her, their collaboration thrusts the duo onto the national stage…and stirs up old issues and new scrutiny that the mob—and Benny—would rather avoid.

It would be easier to walk away. But the music and the woman are too hard for the piano man to resist. Benny’s songs and Esther’s vocals are an explosive combination, a sound that fans can’t get enough of. But though America might love the music they make together, some people aren’t ready for Benny Lament and Esther Mine on—or off—the stage.

Véleményem a könyvről

Benny Lament mindig kerülte a családi ügyleteket.

Imádtam a karaktereket.

Akárcsak a korábbi regényeinél, most is érződött a könyv megírását kísérő hatalmas kutatómunka. A regény elolvasása előtt nem sokat tudtam a 60-as évek Amerikájáról, de úgy érzem, hogy a történet által most egy kicsit nagyobb betekintést nyertem ebbe a korszakba. Imádtam a kötetben lévő dalokat.

My Review in English

Amy Harmon delivered a story about a time when black and white people couldn’t love each other freely, when gangsters ruled the streets of New York and Chicago, when music meant life for so many people. It was so beautiful and touched so many important topics. It was perfect and my favorite read of 2021 so far.

Benny Lament always avoided family business and he doesn’t want to be part of the mob like his father and his Uncle Sal who is one of the leaders of the New York mob scene. He just wants to create music and play the piano minding his own business. But one day he hears the beautiful voice of Esther Mine and his life turns upside down.

Esther is an African American woman whose voice is simply unforgettable. Benny is an Italian American songwriter who decides that he will write a song for Esther and her band, the Minefields. But someone doesn’t like that together they open forgotten chapters of the past and also push boundaries between races and tries to silence them…

There are type of books that just don’t interest me so much and gangster and mafia stories are in this category. But I would read anything written by Amy Harmon and I’m so glad I did! It’s not a usual mob story. This story is more about music, love and civil rights movements. It’s a story about change.

I loved the characters so much! Amy Harmon writes the best female characters and Esther is one of the most unforgettable ones so far. She is hard and feisty but also has a vulnerable side and if you become to know her, she is really loveable. I also truly loved Benny. He was also a really layered and memorable character and I loved his banter and fights with Esther.

Amy Harmon has such a beautiful, outstanding writing style. Her words always resonate with my soul and her stories make me think long after I finish them. Just like with her former books I felt the enormous research behind the story. I didn’t know much about the 60’s before I read this book, but I think I got a great insight thanks to this story. I must also have to mention the songs in the book! They were so perfect and I swear I could almost hear them in my head. This is a beautiful love story but there were also very gripping parts where I just couldn’t put down the book.

Amy Harmon told us a story that did show how change looks like. It tells a story of the past but it also tells the story of the present because the change never stops. Although so many things already improved for colored people during the last decades, civil rights movements still have so many work ahead of them. This story swept me off my feet and I will never forget it. I recommend it with all my heart.

“If you want people to change, you have to show them what it looks like.”
